Will it take an ordinary aerial connection instead of the portable antenna as we live in the country and the portable won't work so we would have to connect it to the main anntena?

To receive all channels on these portable TV Tuners YOU WILL NEED to connect to a larger external antenna. The small antenna's supplied rarely are powerful enough to get more than 1 or 2 channels.
Cheers.

socrates.h is right, in most cases you actually will need the external antenna for it to pick up all channels, this is actually NOT a defect or design fault, it very much depends on how strong tv signal is in the region, in my experience, it is very rare the inernal antenna would pick up more than 2 channels, i even have tried some tv sticks costing 20 times more but result is identical - external antenna is always required to receive all channels.
cheers
