Hi,
It appears (to me) that the 12volt negative and the common from the MP3 player are joined at the USB connector. If so, that is a no-no in most of the audio installation manuals for car stereos so probably, not good for MP3 players either if there's a fault.

interesting observation jenkos, are you saying if there is a short circuit or something the 12v might zap the mp3? also, why is it not good for the car radio? sorry for my ignorance.

Hi,
Not sure what could/would happen, but I guess that's the possible reason. Any time I've installed a car radio/cassette/CD, the manual says to not connect the common from the speaker to the chassis.
